- Valo hajottaa happimolekyylin kahdeksi happiatomiksi (hidas reaktio).
- Otsoni ja happiatomit muuttuvat toisikseen jatkuvasti, sillä Auringon UV-säteily hajottaa otsonimolekyylin ja happiatomi reagoi happimolekyylin kanssa (nopeita reaktioita). Nämä prosessit muuttavat UV-säteilyä lämpöenergiaksi ja siten lämmittävät stratosfääriä.
- Otsoni häviää reagoidessaan happiatomin, toisen otsonimolekyylin tai jonkin muun aineen, kuten klooriatomin, kanssa (hitaita reaktioita).
